Realism is everything, and I mean everything! It's a hard goal to hit when you're a horror director, but when you aim high, you end up with a movie like Barbarian.
Not only was the movie a breath of fresh air within the horror genre, but it also touches on some underlying themes, like gentrification and sexual assault, that have not yet been popularized within the film industry. Like any horror film, you're going to have your typical "scary movie" tropes, but Zach Cregger does an awesome job at making it his own and creating a unique experience.
Barbarian is hard to hate with talents like Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long acting alongside each other. The dialogue was well written, there was a perfect amount of comedic relief during the 2nd third of the movie, and truthfully, this isn't a movie that you can guess the ending too!
All in all, this is easily my favorite horror movie of the year thus far and I hope Cregger continues to push the limits of the genre with another thriller like this.
