Coraline

31 Days of Spooky - Day 1

Happy October 1st and the start of my first inaugural 31 Days of Spooky film reviews! Considering October is one of my favorite months and, it kicks off the best time of the year, I figured it was about time I did something like this. So buckle up, turn off the lights, and join me for 31 days of spooky, starting with...Coraline! I don't think I could have picked a more perfect movie to start with. It's family-friendly, hauntingly stunning, and is an absolute gem of a childhood favorite. This stop-motion film is nothing less than enchanting. The attention to detail, every frame is meticulously crafted, and the fluidity of motion makes this a great movie for art lovers especially! You can't help but appreciate all the time and love that went into creating this twisted and magical world. The focus on darker tones and eerie production design is my favorite aspect. We all know what happens when you introduce a creepy doppelganger into the story (cough cough Jordan Peele).

As I watched this movie, again for the hundredth time, I always admired the character progression of Coraline. She starts as a lonely, discontented, but curious girl, and as the story unfolds, we witness her transformation into a brave and resourceful adventurer. The movie also delves into the importance of family and the allure of escapism. These themes are woven seamlessly into the story, making it relatable for audiences of all ages. Coraline has the rare ability to resonate with both children and adults, making it a true family classic. Overall Rating: 10/10 Rewatchability: Minimum once a year
