Annihilation

31 Days of Spooky- Day 7

I was debating on whether this movie can actually be called a scary movie. My boyfriend wanted a break from the traditional ghosts and demons for something a little different (and also a movie we both haven't seen a million times already). But after watching this movie again, I do think that it absolutely counts. It's creepy as hell and does a better job of creating an unsettling atmosphere than most modern horror movies do today. Annihilation is one of those movies that sticks with you long after the credits roll. It's a different kind of scary movie, and that's what makes it so remarkable.

What sets this movie apart is its utter uniqueness. The movie takes you on a surreal journey where the line between science fiction and horror blurs. The visuals are a feast for the eyes, with the "shimmer" creating a surreal and dreamlike landscape that's both beautiful and unsettling. The movie is very dark and creepy; especially the infamous bear scene; absolute nightmare fuel. It's the combination of the grotesque design of the bear, and the bone-chilling sounds it makes is why it's so unsettling. Annihilation masterfully plays on your fears, leaving you with a sense of unease.

The ending of the movie is ambiguous, and while I don't always love that, it works well in this case. The movie leaves you with questions, inviting you to interpret the story in your own way. It's a bold move that keeps you pondering the mysteries of the film, sparking discussions as soon as the movie ends. Annihilation is a breath of fresh air. It's an enigmatic, thought-provoking, and genuinely different kind of horror film. Overall Rating: 9.1 Rewatchability: Absolutely!
