Saw

31 Days of Spooky- Day 4

In honor of the release of "Saw X," I decided to revisit the original "Saw" movie for last night's spooky film. Reminiscing back to when this movie came out, it was such a game-changer. It offered a level of uniqueness and suspense that elevated it to a whole new level, establishing a legacy that still endures today. What makes it so unique is its unconventional storytelling. The film takes a non-linear approach, weaving a web of shocking twists and turns that keep you perched on the edge of your seat. It set a high standard, one that, unfortunately, the subsequent entries in the franchise struggled to match.

"Saw" has a chilling premise centered around a serial killer known as Jigsaw. Unlike your typical murderer, Jigsaw doesn't simply kill people; he puts his victims in harrowing life-or-death situations designed to test their will to survive. This concept was refreshingly innovative and served as the foundation for the franchise's popularity. And the first movie doesn't rely heavily on graphic gore either. Instead, it leans into the psychological aspect of uncovering the identity of the killer. Of course, we can't forget the iconic twist at the end of the first movie, a jaw-dropping revelation that leaves a lasting impression. Unfortunately, as the franchise progressed, it increasingly favored shock value and gore over the clever storytelling and psychological depth that made the original so compelling.

The original "Saw" is simply a classic. If you're in the mood for a film that's genuinely distinct and makes you contemplate the lengths to which humans will go to survive, this is the one. Overall Rating: 8.9 Rewatchability: For sure!
